In the looking glass, Jherome could see the boneless torso of his paint-spattered smock, floating below a swan-neck hook on the back of the studio. Smells of linseed and turpentine crept from the chamber. Paints and mortars lined the shelves running around the walls. Ivory White. Carmine Lake. Lead Tin Yellow. Azurite. He could see wooden panels through the studio door. Some stood on easels. Others leaned against walls. One or two were hinged threefold, like church icons. Grim, half-made devils, monsters, wan priests, nuns, and, occasionally, the Funnel Man, capered across these boards. He sometimes wondered that he dared include the Funnel Man in his work; feared that the dead freak would peel his oil-painted self from the wood. That he would howl and shriek his accusations as the artist stood, brushes clattering to the floor from his terrified fingers.
